(Flag img taken from Ditesh's post)

Okay .. its 31st August again .. the anniversary of Malaysia independence from Great Britain .. and I'm at home for a holiday .. and guess what .. I noticed a shocking discovery .. The DARNED TMnut blocked my IRC access!!! - on port 6667 in particular

Some Xchat output

SEE THAT??!! .. outbound port 6667 access is blocked!!

being curious if they blocked also inbound port 6667 to my tunneled UTPchat IRC server, I ssh'ed to an external box, made my irc server listening on port 6667-6669 .. and tried netcat'ing to it .. and heres the output

[kagesenshi@devel ~]$ nc tunnel.utpchat.net 6667
[kagesenshi@devel ~]$ nc tunnel.utpchat.net 6668
:tunnel.utpchat.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
:tunnel.utpchat.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Couldn't resolve your hostname; using your IP address instead
^C
[kagesenshi@devel ~]$ nc tunnel.utpchat.net 6669
:tunnel.utpchat.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Looking up your hostname...
:tunnel.utpchat.net NOTICE AUTH :*** Couldn't resolve your hostname; using your IP address instead
^C
[kagesenshi@devel ~]$

Notice that connection is refused to port 6667

WTF!! .. damn .. if not because ure the only ISP which my family can afford, (and generally the ONLY ISP in Malaysia) ... I would tell my dad to switch to other ISP... grrr ....

grr ... Heck .. I want my Freedom!! ..

Its "Merdeka" (Independence) anniversary .. and here I am , with my Freedom to IRC blocked ..

wow that really sucks. so did you get your IRC back?

and my company was going to open new servers at malaysia isp for our asian hosting market, is it advisable to keep servers in malaysia? technical and political reasons?

Thanks for your compiz-fedora repo btw :).

Cheers,
Anshuman.

@anshuman

I checked today and it seems that its back ..

recommendation of Malaysian ISP eh .. i dont think i'm a suitable person to judge this .. however, generally, the ISPs will not do crazy stuff like this to enterprise packages ..

TMnet has the largest userbase in consumer broadband -> mainly due to its wide coverage, and cheap price .. and its basically the monopoly of the land phone lines in Malaysia ..

Jaring is usually more preferred by enterprise users ..

List of Malaysian ISP

I'm not a person to judge which is better - because I had never tried their enterprise packages and the only ISP i've used is TMnet

but so far, TMnet tend to make crazy moves on their consumer packages that makes geeks angry .. -> like blocking P2P esp. Torrent , suddenly block certain access etc ..

maybe the people from #myoss freenode can give you more info related to this

my brain still can comprehend if tmnut suddenly decided to block p2p ports. But hell, blocking efficient and bandwidth saving protocol such as IRC? that's just plain crazy...

while in the process, why dont they block http/https and ftp port too since those protocol incur a lot of data transfer
